Create Your Masterpiece: Investigating the Affects of Dissolved Oxygen on Fish Respiration

I have been feeling inspired since starting the TPT Challenge.  I am connecting with more teachers.  I am finishing up projects and getting lots of tips.

This weeks challenge was to make your masterpiece.  We then swapped products with another seller to proofread.  I decided I would finish up a wonderful investigation I did with a class this year.  It was a modification on an experiment I did years ago.  This investigation is a step up and teaches a lot of science.
This investigation uses live fish to learn about respiration, dissolved oxygen, and fish. Students will investigate to answer the question:

Does the amount of dissolved oxygen affect the respiration rate in fish?

This investigation meets the *Next Generation Science Standards 3rd-5th Grade Science and Engineering Practices. Students will follow the scientific method to answer the question. Using the pre-reading and their prior knowledge, students will write an educated hypothesis.

Students will be very excited to use live fish in collecting data on the respiration rate. They will count how many times the gill cover opens and closes.   Fish are great to have in the elementary classroom.  After the investigation students will calculate the mean, summarize their data, and analyze the results.

Along with the background information for teachers I added additional pre-reading and follow up reading pages.  I think this will help the students understand and enjoy the experiment even more.

Students will love being able to use live fish. Teachers will enjoy watching students investigate. This is a wonderful way to learn about oxygen depletion on fish.  I think this would be wonderful for Earth Day.

After the experiment you have classroom pets or students could take the fish home.  Simple supplies and great impact.  I bought my fish for only $0.17 each. special thank you to Stephanie at Special Adventures.  I swapped products with her.  She gave me great tips and found some proofreading errors.  It was nice to connect with another seller.  They see things we don't always see.  Here is the link to her store.  She created a cloud activity that goes with "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs."  Be sure to check out her store.

Investigating Fish Respiration is now in my store.  It is 20% off May 8th, 9th, and 10th.  Be sure to check it out.

  1. I love this activity. I also teach science. I wish I could use this in my class but we aren't allowed live animals, not even fish. This would have been a great activity. Following you to find out more amazing ideas you have

    1. I am so happy you like the activity. That is a shame you can not use animals. Hopefully, some other teachers are able to use animals. I like using worms and mealworms too. Thanks for following. I love your blog.
