Be on the Look Out for Exploring the Properties of Matter

This week I am taking part in a BOLO Link Up.  BOLO means be on the look out.  This year my Creating and Conducting Investigation class is having a Matter theme.  To start out the unit it is important to make sure the students understand what matter is.  We focused on the 3 main states of matter:  solids, liquids, and gases.

Here is a glimpse of the product.  It will be available in two age levels, 2nd/3rd Grade and 4th/5th Grade.  I am making the final changes.  The students were very focused during the activity.  The lesson focuses on creating observations, matter taking up space, and how the different states of matter flow differently.

The first part is to observe the properties of matter using balloons.  This is done in a rally table format.  Students can not talk.  All communication is on the paper.  I have a student that loves to talk and he was quiet as a mouse for the activity.

After building knowledge on the properties of matter it is time to investigate.  Students will explore the properties of solids, liquids, and gasses inside eggs.  Students will use the scientific method to answer the question:

Does the state of an egg affect the spin of an egg?

All the students really enjoyed spinning the eggs.  Have you ever tried it.  Here is a video showing the spin/touch test on a raw egg.

Students will rank their data, create a graph, and write a conclusion.  Great to expand on for science fairs too.

Also included in Exploring Matter:

Parent Take Home Challenge

Clay Ball Challenge

What do you think?  Please take the time to write me some feedback. Would you like me to add anything?  Since it is still in the works I can easily add or change things.

Be on the Look Out

Thank you to the wonderful teacher authors for sponsoring the BOLO.
