6 Engaging Classroom Earth Day Activities

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated every April 22nd in over 193 countries to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. Classrooms can play a big part in Earth Day by participating in activities to become more environmentally aware. Here are some great activities teachers can integrate into their Earth Day celebrations.

Invent A New Type of Ecofriendly Packaging Material

Is all packaging material the same? What does it mean if something is biodegradable? Why do we recycle? This engaging STEAM Unit will inspire kids to make a difference in lessening our carbon footprint. We love this lesson because it is available in 4 different grade-level versions.

Explore the Challenges of Oil and Water Mixing.

Why are oil spills bad? This activity will demonstrate that oil and water do not mix. It is a fun one-day lesson that can lead to exploring past oil spills and the best way to clean them up. We call it the oil and water feud.

What Does it Mean if a Lake is dead?

Why do bodies of water need oxygen?  Students will investigate how decreasing dissolved oxygen levels in lakes affect fish. Kids can explore what is causing oxygen depletion in water and how it affects the environment. This is a wonderful way to expand into the fertilizer crisis and the effects of Algae Blooms.

Make Plastic Milk
Real plastic is terrible for the environment. Help your students learn about natural and synthetic materials by making plastic milk. Since Earth Day is just before Mother's Day, this could become a great gift for mom.

Discover What Plants Need to Survive

Growing plants is a favorite for kids.  Earth Day is a great time to inspire students to become gardeners. Since Earth Day is in the spring, students can take their plants home and start a garden.  We love to use bean seeds.

Create Seed Bombs

This activity goes perfectly with "The Lorax." Students will enjoy expanding into their own backyard. You might even have a flower bed at school where these can be planted too. Learn how with Little Bins For Little Hands.

Enjoy your Earth Day explorations, and remember to take them up a notch to help create the next generation of problem solvers.
