10 Engaging Valentine Science and STEM Activities

Holidays are a  great time to integrate science.  Valentine's Day allows for a lot of fun and unique activities.

Here are 10 that are sure to engage students and align with many areas of science.

Dancing Candy Heart Science

Learn about density, sinking, and floating in this classic lab.  You will even learn how life jackets work.  Head on over for the details.

Valentine Circuits

This is a great addition to your electricity unit.  They would make great Valentine's cards.  Head on over for the details at Leftbraincraft.com.

Create a Love Potion

This fun lab is also called a Homemade Lava lamp.  All you need is some oil and water.  Color the water red for that Valentine's theme.

Color Changing Flowers

This is such a classic experiment.  It is often done with celery, but take it up a notch with flowers.  This makes a great STEAM activity.  The flowers can then become presents for Valentine's Day.

Candy Diffusion Explorations

Candy in water can do some amazing things.  To make it Valentine's, use Valentine's candy.  We also like to have students arrange the candy into heart shapes.  My favorite is red hot candies.  See examples here.

Valentine Candy Towers and Bridges

Integrate a fun STEM challenge.  Students could even try to build a famous bridge.  Just search the Valentine candy aisle for marshmallow hearts, gummy hearts, and other candy that toothpicks will stick through.

Heart Crystals STEAM Activity

This is a fantastic experiment that really takes crystals up a notch.  Crystals can be done for any holiday.  Just take the pipe cleaner and make it into a heart shape.  Color the water red or purple, and use red or purple pipe cleaners.

Strawberry DNA Lab

The ultimate Valentine's treat is chocolate-covered strawberries.  Learn about strawberries and DNA in this popular activity.  It is most suited for the middle school curriculum.  Steve Spangler Science has a great explanation with a video.

Heart Rate Exploration

If you are looking for an experiment that is fun, easy to set up and teaches the scientific method, this is it.  It is great for all grade levels.  Gym teachers can integrate it into a fun Valentine's PE class.

Pop Rock Science

Pop rocks are fantastic.  They are found in most dollar stores.  Kids love them.  This activity is sure to be a hit.  To make it Valentine's themed, have the students draw a heart on the balloon.  As the balloon expands, the heart will grow.

Have a fun and engaging Valentine's Day!
